With a history that runs back to the 10th century, Polonnaruwa is the second kingdom of Sri Lanka that has its golden era from 1056 to 1236. Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa showcases the well-preserved ruins of the ancient kingdom from palaces, temples, hospitals to gigantic Buddha statues.

What to do?

Wander around the historical city listening to the interesting stories of kings and queens of the yesteryear’s. Explore the ruins admiring the amazing stone and woodwork as you pass the gigantic statues of Gal Vihara and Vatada Geya. Have a good laugh enjoying the company of the monkeys roaming around and make sure to witness the ocean like Parakarama Samudraya- the well-known reservoir filled with lotus flowers.

You can explore Polonnaruwa by a bicycle and enjoy the local farming culture and lush paddy fields that run till your eyes can see.
